Magnification

Magnification indicates how many times closer an object appears through a pair of binoculars. It is represented by the first number in the binocular specification. For example, in 8×42, the 8× means the object appears 8 times closer than it does to the naked eye. While higher magnification reveals more detail, it also results in a narrower field of view and increased image shake.
